A short history on 454 Casull ammo...

454 Casull ammunition was first developed in 1957 by Dick Casul and Jack Fulmer and it was first introduced by Guns & Ammo magazine in November of 1959.  It was primarily designed for medium to large game handgun hunting and predator defense.  The basic design was an improved version of the 45 colt case which made the newer design more lengthened and structurally improved.  45 Colt rounds can fit into 454 Casull chambers, however, the reverse cannot be accomplished because of the lengthened case.

Newer 454 Casull rounds employ the use of small rifle primers rather than pistol primers because it produces extremely high chamber pressures, well over 60,000 CUP (copper units of pressure), which is much stronger thant pistol primers.  The 454 Casull can project a 250 grain bullet with a muzzle velocity over 1900 fps, producing over 2000 ft. Ibs. of muzzle energy.  Energy levels from common 454 revolvers with 7 to 8" barrels are somewhat slower coming in at 1600 to 1700 ft. Ibs.

Originally loaded with a triplex load of propellants, this ammunition produced dynamic acceleration of the bullet as it passed through the barrel because of progressive burning aided by the rifle primer ignition.  Freedom Arms developed the first commercially available 454 Casull chambered revolver in 1983, which was a 5-shot revolver.  In 1997, Ruger followed suit by chambering its "Super Redhawk" in this caliber followed by Taurus with the "Raging Bull" model in 1998.

Smith and Wesson recently developed 460 Smith and Wesson Magnum ammo which has the same diameter as the 45 Colt and 454 Casull.  In turn, revolvers chambered for it will also chamber the 45 Colt and the 454 Casull.  Before the introduction of 460 Smith and Wesson Magnum and 500 Smith and Wesson Magnum ammunition, the 454 Casull cartridge was the most powerful commercially produced handgun round on the market, which was more powerful than the recently developed 50 Action Express.
